WHAT IS THE SOS PROJECT?

SOS is here to save schools

The Schools Support Centre (CDS) is an initiative of Solidarity Helping Hand to ensure that African schools can provide education of world class and will still continue for years.

The SOS provides professional development for teachers and skills for pupils in subjects such as mathematics and Afrikaans.

The organization realised the need for quality education in any society and the enormous influence of teachers on students and their ultimate success. In addition, happy, well-equipped teachers’ enthusiasm is contagious which certainly spreads to the students. That is why two professional trade associations established an initiative that caters specifically to the interests of teachers teaching Afrikaans as their home language, and mathematics.

The Association of African Teachers of Mathematics (V.A.W.) is the only professional association for all math teachers in South Africa. They offer professional support to African mathematics teachers or anyone with an interest in mathematics. It is in the form of three-day mathematics conferences, one-day mathematics courses and shorter afternoon seminars.

The Society for Law African Language Teachers (Geared) is aimed through, inter alia, subject-oriented seminars and composition of various subjects and technological resources to provide the necessary support to African teachers.

At this societies’ conferences, courses and seminars emphasise the holistic professional development of Afrikaans and Mathematics Teachers. The training includes, among others, training in technology and subject matter in order to empower teachers with the latest teaching methods. In the afternoon, seminars approached experts and exchanged views on quality education in Afrikaans.
