For every lonely elderly, there is an indigent pre-schooler who needs love.
The Bible is very clear about our responsibility towards vulnerable people in our community. We are supposed to support the widows and the orphans. Therefore, Solidarity decided to bring these two groups together with a very unique project.
The Pre-schoolers and Old-timers project brings elderly people and pre-schoolers together since 2015 for a day filled with fun. This project were tried in many parts of the country and has the same wonderful results every time. The elderly gets life put back in their bones and the pre-schoolers receives lots of love.
This year the Pre-schoolers and Old-timers took place at the Margaretha Ackerman home, one of the South African Women’s Federation’s homes in Pretoria. Helping Hand took 30 pre-schoolers from the Tuindwergies nursery to the home to visit the elderly. The day was made extra special with a show by Jan de Wet, a well-known singer.
According to Lizelle Joubert, Project Organiser for Helping Hand’s elderly projects this project has been a success every year. “Lots of elderly people become lonely but the friendly face of a child has the power to cheer a heavy heart up in no time. The interactions are always very positive and we believe this time will be no different,” said Joubert.
The social worker, Ditlhare Mokhema described the children as angels. “You have made not only our day, but our year!” Mokhema said. “You have brought life back into the home.”
